A Tribute to Russ White; By "A Friend" Mr. Russell E. White - "Russ" to all who knew him, passed away on March 1st. 1985
Russ was one of Canada's finest beaglers in every sense of being. He was a tireless and dedicated club member who gave his all whenever and wherever he participated. During the sixties and seventies, Russ was an inspirational leader in the Atlantic Beagle Club Of Nova Scotia. He also was a strong supporting member of the Fundy Trail Beagle club and one of the founders of the original Maritime association Of Beagle Clubs. Russ held the positions of Secretary, President, and/or Field Trial Chairman in these organizations for several years. Russ was never too busy to help on any committee; never in too much of a hurry not to promote and encourage new beaglers; always ready to listen to new ideas; always able to stabilize the over eager youngsters, while at the same time, whipping up enthusiasm in the older club members.
Besides his contributions to the aforementioned organizations, Russ was a Canadian Kennel Club Beagle Field Trial Representative for Nova scotia and Newfoundland. Russ was also a well respected CKC LPH judge whose ability to assess a pack was beyond reproach. His beagling wisdom is reflected in his breeding results which established Whiook's Kennels as a household name in Maritime beagling. Following is a brief list of Whiook's Kennels accomplishments;
FTCH Blue Flame Jet, FTCH Whiook's Blue Flame Jet 11, FTCH Whiook's Blue Flame Jet V, FTCH Whiook's Blue Flame Sugar, FTCH Whiook's Blue Flame Snowcloud, FTCH Whiook's Tumbleweed Skipper, FTCH Whiook's Blue Flame Skipper, FTCH Whiook's Blue Flame Pawnette, FTCH Whiook's Blue Flame Rockette, FTCH Whiook's Blue Flame Cindy, FTCH Whiook's Blue Flame Trigger, FTCH Whiook's Blue Flame Snowdancer and FTCH Doverhill Hawaiian Music.
A few years after completion of his service career as a Chief Petty Officer in the Royal Canadian Navy, Russ left the Maritimes and re-located in Western Ontario. Although he was absent from beagling for his first few years in Ontario, Russ was soon bitten by the bug. He could stay away no longer. He retrieved his old FTCH Whiook's Blue Flame Snow Cloud, and soon got her in condition. Russ was back in the winner's circle at his very first Western Ontario LPH trial. He joined York Counties Beagle Club in Keldon Ont. and continued to campaign Snow Cloud, primarily for the enjoyment of his two children, Kelly 13, and Chris 11, Russ was once again a member of the Beagle Field Trial Council, this time as an Ontario appointee. There is no doubt Russ had a lot of talent to offer any Beagling group and he would have been, not only an influential asset to the council, but also once again a top contender with his new stock from his old Whiook's line.
Russ was always a gentleman and a credit to the sport. Although he never hesitated to speak his mind telling it like he saw it, he never had an enemy in the world. Besides his children, Ann, Kelly, and Chris, he leaves his wife Pat and many, many friends behind all of whom know "Whiook's will run forever, in Heaven!"
